Feral Hive Extraction
Friday, April 17, 2009
10 AM
Braddock

We'll be removing a feral colony from a derelict building on the corner of 8th and Talbot in Braddock starting at 10AM this Friday the 17th. The colony looks pretty healthy, and since the structure is slated for demolition, it's time for them to move! We plan to cut the brood comb to fit deep hive body frames, secure them in empty frames with gum bands, and divide them up into "nucs" so we can requeen them with queens from Hawaii (due to arrive by post today!). All these new minicolonies will come out to our apiary in Aliquippa, so I can closely supervise queen acceptance and build them up. As the new queens start laying, we'll use the new colonies for Burgh Bee apiaries in town, as well as have a few (hopefully) for individuals taking the course.
If you want to check the job in Braddock out, feel free to come down! We'll have extra veils and gloves.

Burgh Bees announces beekeeping training!
Greetings Friends and Bee Lovers,

We're delighted to announce that Burgh Bees--the fledgling organization for urban beekeepers that we've been working on all fall and winter--will be holding two "Are You Bee Curious?" sessions in Pittsburgh and offering a year-long beginning beekeeping training, which
begins on April 5th. We will also be establishing two apiaries around the city: one in Braddock and the other in Hazelwood. So, if you've hesitated to dive into beekeeping because you don't have a place to put hives, your dreams have--or soon will--come true!

Attached is an announcement about the Bee Curious Sessions and the tentative schedule for the beekeeping training.

If you have questions or want to register for the training, please email us at burghbees@gmail.com. By emailing us there, you'll help to keep us a little more organized. And of course, please forward this along to anyone who might be interested.

These programs are supported in part by a generous grant from the Sprout Fund (www.sproutfund.org). Without their help, we wouldn't have been able to get this off the ground!

Hope to see you soon!

All the best,
Burgh Bees
